Birchas Kohanim / The Priestly Blessings book
Birchas Kohanim: The Priestly Blessings in English Birchas Kohanim, The Priestly Blessings, by Rabbi Avie Gold and Rabbi Nosson Scherman, a 95 page English hardcover. Three verses, fifteen words, and a volume this size: the length is the point, because the brachah the kohanim give is among the most concentrated passages in the Torah and repays being taken slowly. Almost every word carries a commentary tradition behind it, and the structure of the verses themselves, expanding as they go, is treated as meaningful. A short book on a short text is the correct shape for this. Ninety five pages allows each phrase to be worked through without the volume becoming a general treatment of tefillah. Gold and Scherman Rabbi Nosson Scherman is the general editor of the ArtScroll series and Rabbi Avie Gold has written across the overview and commentary volumes. The style will be familiar to anyone who reads the ArtScroll overviews: English prose with the Hebrew sources translated and explained. That means no Hebrew is needed to follow the book, which is what makes it usable for a reader who hears birchas kohanim regularly and has never had it explained. Who It Suits It suits anyone who wants to understand what is being said over them during duchening, a kohen who wants to understand what he is saying, and a parent who blesses children on Friday night with the same words. At 95 pages it is a short read rather than a project. Hardcover at $19.99, priced as a gift book, which is also how it is commonly bought. Frequently Asked Questions Is it in English?
