Biblical Questions, Spiritual Journeys
Biblical Questions, Spiritual Journeys by Rabbi Emanuel Feldman Biblical Questions, Spiritual Journeys by Rabbi Emanuel Feldman is a 188 page English book about the questions in Tanach: the rhetorical ones, the ambiguous ones, the ones that seem unanswerable and the ones that only open further questions. Feldman's argument is that the questions are the teaching method rather than gaps in it. Ayekah, where are you, asked of a person Hashem can see. Where is Hevel your brother, asked of the one who knows. These are not gaps in the narrative; they are the narrative doing something. Feldman's case is that this is deliberate pedagogy. A question puts the reader in the position of having to answer, which a statement does not, and that is why so much of Tanach is written this way. Feldman as a Writer Rabbi Emanuel Feldman spent decades as a congregational rabbi and writes like it: direct, without academic apparatus, and aimed at someone who will read the book once and then think about it. He is a veteran teacher of Torah in English, and the book assumes no Hebrew and no background. It works for someone coming to Tanach study late as much as for someone who has learned it for years. Length and Format At 188 pages this is a short book, which suits a subject built around questions rather than a system. It can be read over a Yom Tov and returned to. 1800 Eichlers stocks it in both hardcover and paperback. At $19.99 it is an accessible price for a hardcover in English.
