Most homes need four things for Chanukah: a menorah, oil or candles to light it, something for the children such as dreidels and gelt, and a few decorations and gifts to make the eight nights feel special. Use this checklist before the first night:
Start with how you light. An oil menorah suits families who light with olive oil, which many prefer because it recalls the miracle of the oil. A candle menorah is quick to set up every night. Whichever you choose, the eight lights should stand in a straight row at the same height, with the shamash set apart.

Both are used. Olive oil is the classic choice, and you can buy it in bottles with a pouring nozzle, as pre-filled oil cups, or as jelled olive oil lights that are clean and fast to set up. Candles are simple for children who light their own menorah.
Plan ahead for Friday nights. In 2026 the first night (Friday, December 4) and the eighth night (Friday, December 11) both fall on Erev Shabbos. The menorah is lit before the Shabbos candles and needs enough oil, or a large enough candle, to burn until at least half an hour after nightfall. Both are correct. They are English spellings of the Hebrew word חנוכה. "Chanukah" reflects the Hebrew pronunciation, while "Hanukkah" is the most common spelling in general use. Hanukah and Chanukkah are also seen.
You need 44 candles for one menorah: 36 for the eight nights plus one shamash each night. Most boxes of Chanukah candles hold 44 or 45, so one box covers one menorah. If each child lights a menorah, buy one box per menorah.
