Abraham, Abraham S.

Abraham S. Abraham, M.D., FRCP.

Abraham S. Abraham was born in Jerusalem and received his medical training in England, graduating in 1960 (MBChB). In 1968 he was awarded his M.D. by the University of Birmingham for his pioneering work on the effects of oxygen in chronic bronchitis. In 1977 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) which is the highest honor a physician can receive in the U.K. In 1968-9 he was a Senior Research Fellow at the John Hopkins University, Baltimore.

Since 1989 Prof. Abraham has been the Chief of Internal Medicine B at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. In 1990 he was elected a Professor of Medicine at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School where he was awarded the faculty prize for outstanding research and has been included in the list of outstanding teachers on several occasions.

Prof. Abraham has published over eighty articles in international medical journals including three in The New England Journal of Medicine.

In the field of medical Halachah, Prof. Abraham has published numerous articles and books including Lev Avraham (Hebrew) and The Comprehensive Guide to Medical Halachah (English). His six volumes of Nishmat Avraham (Hebrew, 3 first volumes in English too) are an essential text for physicians, laymen and rabbis alike, encompassing medico-Halachic problems and their solutions in all branches of medicine and surgery. Recently he published two pocket-sized books (both in Hebrew and in English) dealing specifically with medical problems on the Sabbath, Festivals and Yom Kippur, for the physician and patient respectively.
