Nine Out of Ten

By Dr. Moshe Katz Nine Out of Ten Large View

At war's end, the piteous, battered remnants of a once proud Hungarian Jewry began making their way back to their hometowns in search of fellow survivors. The Katz family was no different. Or were they? Nine out of ten siblings from one family - an almost unheard of survival rate - escaped death to be reunited. This is their story - and what a story it was! Resourcefulness, courage and amazing acts of heroism, showing kindness to their fellow Jews, at the risk of their own lives; flight, imprisonment, deportation and escape; hope, despair, prayer and faith; these are some of the elements that combine to create a Holocaust saga unlike any you've ever heard before - until now!

A story like no other
Reviewed by Haskel Moishe Rosenfeld from New York, USA

Dr. Moshe Katz's powerful book, "Nine Out of Ten", relates the remarkable story of his survival in Nazi occupied Europe, along with eight of his nine siblings.

Disguised as a gentile, young Moshe, a yeshiva boy from a locally well known family, wilily managed to repeatedly evade the Nazis, either by hiding or disguised as a gentile.

This book leaves one spellbound, as Mr. Katz's steel determination in the midst of unmitigated hell is fatefully tested.

While daily walking a tightrope for his own survival, the author bravely assisted in the rescue of numerous others. Every day a new story... a new challenge... a new opportunity...

While on the run for his life, he risked it to save others.

The author's parents and one brother were murdered in concentration camps (may G-d avenge their killings), while the remainder of his large family, nine siblings- "Nine Out of Ten"- survived; against all odds and in varied ways.

One day at war's end, Mr. Katz sees two filthy, anemic looking men, sitting on the front steps of his apartment. Altruistically, he offers the concentration camp survivors some nourishment. One man points to the other, and asks Moshe if he recognizes him. Moshe had been unknowingly, feeding his own brother- what was left of him.

The book continues onto post-war, where, in different parts of the world: nine orphans of the holocaust heroically rebuilt their tattered lives; the penultimate revenge against a protagonists that sought their complete annihilation.

Dr. Katz came to America; married; had children; prospered in business; built a vibrant Jewish community (Lawrence, N.Y.); and wrote a book for his many grandchildren- and the rest of the public.

Dr. Katz's moving story of his family will leave you, sad in its night, hopeful in its day.

A Truly Inspiring One Of A Kind Story
Reviewed by Joseph Zoimen from Jeruslam, Israel

This book totally blew me away with its flowing storyline, masterful subplots and total ingenious ways that Dr. Katz's family survived and outlived the Nazis and are here today so many of them surviving to tell this wonderful powerful story. This book is a testament of the Jews will to carry on, surviving such a dark and bitter period of their history to rebuild in America. It tells of the efforts Dr. Katz put into building a network of Jewish schools and seminaries in his hometown of Lawrence, NY. This book left me proud to be a Jew and has inspired me to look to the past in order to change the future. I would be proud to be Dr. Katz's grandchild. We would love to see further books from this author, I'm sure there are more stories where this came from.
