Bitter Freedom is the harrowing tale of five who survived the Nazi death machine with the aid of a Polish workman who thought it better to save a fgew than be complicit in the deaths of many. Jozio Zwonarz helped spirit away four escapees from the Zaslaw concentration camp near Lesko, in 1942 Poland, and concealed them under the very noses of the Gestapo for twento-two months in a manmade cave benaeath his cellar floor; all the while playing a deadly cat and mouse game with the authorities to kep the four-year old child of Jafa Wallach safe from harm. As Wallach recounts in her unique tale Bitter Freedom, out of 30,000 Jews in the area in which she grew up only eighty remained to tell the tale after th war. Wallach has written the story for them all.
