What is the Haggadah? The centerpiece of the Seder -- yes. A collection of stories, interpretations, and praises -- yes. A springboard for ideas and hopes -- yes. It is all of those, but it is much more. For the Haggadah is a collection of Scriptural verses, Talmud and Midrash. To understand it clearly requires a command of the breadth and depth of Torah literature. When one finds a person who combines such intellectual accomplishment with incisive thought, originality, and felicity of language -- one has found a master interpreter capable of bringing the Haggadah to life.
